October Birthstones Round 2. Tourmalines!

October Birthstones Round 2. Tourmaline

Well, it's round two of my favorite birthstone month.  Two weeks ago we covered opals, and in case you missed any of that fiery goodness get a refresher here.

Tourmaline is without a doubt, one of my all time favorite stones.  The vast variety of colors ranging in hue from light petal pink to dark raspberry, apple green to the rich verdant green of light coming through the forest trees.  Brown waters of a mountain lake or perhaps a perfect slice of watermelon.  It covers them all and is thought to be a very good stone to aid in the understanding of ones self and others.  For me, this stone has a real grounding feeling and will forever be ceaselessly fascinating.

Did you know that there are stones that correspond to the signs of the zodiac?  To research yours is a good way to find out about new stones and if you're one of those people who isn't a fan of your birthstone it can be a good way to find something you love.  In that sense, Tourmaline corresponds to the signs of Virgo and Libra.

Each color has it's own properties and benefits.

 *  Black tourmaline is thought to repel negativity while purifying and promoting self      confidence.

*  Blue tourmaline (also called indicolite) is a good choice if you're working on a meditation practice, trying to increase awareness, are searching for inner peace, or seeking to find spiritual freedom.

*  Green can help to quiet a stressed mind.

*  Yellow can stimulate intellectual and business pursuits.

*  Pink promotes love and the release of pain and destructive habits.

The tourmaline has been found in Brazil, Afghanistan, and even right here in the 'ole USA.  There are mines up in the Northwest and I was lucky enough score some really beautiful and locally sourced stones recently.  I like knowing their story.  They were found in Maine, cut in New Jersey and soon will find homes in some one of a kind pieces.  Stay tuned for pics here.

Now that you know a little more about the tourmaline, which color feels like it would be the best fit for you?

Now I'm dreaming of going to Maine for some tourmaline hunting and gluten free lobster rolls.  Who's with me?
